Enter your entry, exit (or target) price, direction and lot size to see the result in pips and money. Add your stop-loss to get the reward-to-risk ratio — the number that decides whether a trade is worth taking.
Why reward-to-risk matters more than win rate
| Reward : risk | Break-even win rate | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 : 1 | 67% | Typical of scalping with wide stops — very hard to sustain |
| 1 : 1 | 50% | Needs a genuine edge to be profitable after spread |
| 2 : 1 | 33% | The professional standard; profitable with a mediocre win rate |
| 3 : 1 | 25% | Swing trading from key levels; loses most trades and still wins overall |
Set the target at the next key level and the stop beyond the last swing; if the ratio is below 1.5:1, skip the trade.
Worked examples (1 standard lot, USD account)
| Trade | Entry → exit | Pips | P&L |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long EUR/USD | 1.0850 → 1.0910 | +60 | 0.0060 × 100,000 = +$600 |
| Short GBP/USD | 1.2700 → 1.2745 | −45 | −0.0045 × 100,000 = −$450 |
| Long USD/JPY | 150.00 → 151.20 | +120 | 1.20 × 100,000 = ¥120,000 ÷ 151.20 = +$794 |
| Short XAU/USD | 2,500.00 → 2,470.00 | +300 ($30) | 30 × 100 oz = +$3,000 |
Note the USD/JPY case: profit accrues in yen and is converted at the exit rate, which is why the calculator asks for the quote-to-account rate. Overnight positions also pay or earn swap — typically a few dollars per lot per night on the majors — which the calculator does not include; check your broker's swap table.
