How cross rates are derived

Banks quote crosses from the dollar legs. Three cases:

CrossFormulaWorked example
EUR/GBPEUR/USD ÷ GBP/USD1.0850 ÷ 1.2700 = 0.8543
EUR/JPYEUR/USD × USD/JPY1.0850 × 150.00 = 162.75
CHF/JPYUSD/JPY ÷ USD/CHF150.00 ÷ 0.9000 = 166.67
AUD/NZDAUD/USD ÷ NZD/USD0.6500 ÷ 0.6000 = 1.0833

The rule: if the common currency (USD) is the quote in both legs, divide; if it is the quote in one and the base in the other, multiply. Because of this arithmetic, a 50-pip rally in EUR/USD with GBP/USD flat moves EUR/GBP by roughly 40 pips — one major's move propagates into every cross containing it.

Cross spreads and pip values

A cross's spread is roughly the sum of its two legs' spreads, which is why EUR/GBP (≈1–2 pips) costs more to trade than EUR/USD (≈0.5 pips) despite moving less. Pip values on crosses must be converted: one pip on EUR/GBP is £10 per standard lot, which at GBP/USD 1.27 is $12.70 — the pip calculator handles the conversion when you enter the quote-to-account rate.
