How to trade forex news

News moves forex in two ways. Scheduled releases (NFP, CPI, rate decisions) are known in advance — the market prices a consensus, and the move comes from the surprise versus that consensus. Unscheduled headlines (intervention, geopolitical shocks, surprise resignations) hit an unprepared market and produce the largest, fastest moves. A practical framework:

  1. Before the release: know the consensus, the previous print and which direction would surprise the market more. Flatten or widen stops five minutes ahead.
  2. At the release: spreads widen and the first move is often a liquidity flush. Waiting for the first 5-minute candle to close avoids the worst of the whipsaw.
  3. After the release: the sustained move usually develops over the following 1–4 hours as institutions reposition. Use the key levels as targets.
