Reading a forex quote
A quote such as EUR/USD 1.0850 / 1.0851 means one euro buys 1.0850 US dollars if you sell (bid) and costs 1.0851 if you buy (ask). The 0.0001 difference is the spread — one pip on EUR/USD. For JPY pairs a pip is 0.01, and for gold most brokers quote a pip as $0.10. Use the pip calculator to convert pips into money for your lot size.
The change column shows today's move versus the previous daily close (00:00 UTC). A +0.40% day on EUR/USD is a large move; a +0.40% day on gold is ordinary. See each pair's typical range on its analysis page.
When are forex prices live?
The forex market trades 24 hours a day from the Sydney open on Sunday 22:00 UTC to the New York close on Friday 21:00 UTC (22:00 UTC in winter). Prices shown outside those hours are the last traded quotes. Gold and oil follow similar hours with a short daily break. Read more in our trading sessions guide.
