Candlestick Patterns for Forex Traders
Most candlestick patterns are noise. These ten, at the right level, are signal.
The rule before the patterns
A candlestick pattern is a snapshot of who won a battle at a specific price. It only matters where a battle was likely — at a key level, in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend. The same pin bar in the middle of a range is worthless. Context first, pattern second.
Reversal patterns
| Pattern | What it looks like | Meaning | Entry / stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pin bar (hammer / shooting star) | Long wick ≥ 2× body, small body at one end | Sharp rejection of a level | Break of the body; stop beyond the wick |
| Bullish / bearish engulfing | Body completely covers the previous candle's body | Momentum shift | Close of the engulfing candle; stop beyond its extreme |
| Morning / evening star | Three candles: big move, small indecision, big reversal | Reversal after exhaustion | Close of the third candle |
| Doji at a level | Open ≈ close, wicks both sides | Indecision; needs the next candle to confirm | Break of the doji's range |
| Tweezer top / bottom | Two candles with matching highs or lows | Double rejection of a price | Break of the second candle's body |
Continuation patterns
| Pattern | What it looks like | Meaning | Entry / stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside bar | Candle fully within the previous candle's range | Pause in a trend; volatility contraction | Break of the mother bar in the trend direction; stop at the other side |
| Three white soldiers / black crows | Three consecutive strong candles | Strong momentum | Pullback entry, not chase |
| Marubozu | Full-body candle, no wicks | One-sided control | Retest of the candle's midpoint |
| Rising / falling three methods | Big candle, three small counter candles inside, big candle | Trend resumption | Close of the final candle |
| Flag (multi-candle) | Sharp move, tight sloping consolidation | Continuation | Break of the flag; target = flagpole length |
Timeframes
Patterns are more reliable on higher timeframes: a daily pin bar at a weekly level is a swing-trade signal; a 15-minute pin bar is a scalp at best. On the 1H and 4H charts — the day trader's timeframes — insist on the level and the trend before trusting the candle. Practise identifying these on the live charts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most reliable candlestick pattern?
The pin bar and the engulfing candle, when they form at a strong support or resistance level in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.
Do candlestick patterns work in forex?
At key levels and with the trend, yes — they are one of the best entry-timing tools. In isolation, no.
